Krishnagiri: Continuous rain in the catchment zones of the Thenpennai River in Karnataka has resulted in a notable increase in inflow into the Kelavarapalli dam near Hosur in Krishnagiri district.As per the water resources department’s official figures, the dam recorded an inflow of 1,381 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on Wednesday, and 1,038 cusecs on Thursday. With the water level now at 42.48 feet compared with its total capacity of 44.28 feet, officials have let out 1,200 cusecs into the Thenpennai River.Meanwhile, the high level of water release has led to anxiety among residents and farmers in nearby low-lying areas. They also pointed out that significant amount of chemical foam, along with a bad smell is moving downstream. The presence of foamy patches has left villagers concerned about pollution and its effect on farming activity.Farmers in Hosur have expressed concern over repeated contamination in the river. They claim untreated industrial waste being discharged into the river is behind the chemical froth. “We depend on this river for irrigation. If this continues, our crops and soil will be ruined,” said S C Govindan, a farmer. Another resident T Sugavanam said, “The stench is unbearable. Authorities must act before this becomes a health hazard.”The situation has led to broader concerns across the Hosur belt, with demands for a prompt enquiry and strict action to prevent industrial waste discharge into the river.
