Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) mass anti-rabies vaccination drive has covered 60,216 stray dogs so far. The animals are also being treated for parasites on skin and given deworming medication.The campaign was launched on Aug 11, targeting two lakh strays across the city, with 10 teams deployed in each zone. The intensive drive is being carried out on streets, in schools, hospitals and other locations.The latest figure shows that nearly 30% of the target has been achieved across six zones. GCC data shows Thiruvottiyur recording the highest number at 12,684, followed by Adyar (11,895), Valasaravakkam (11,795), Royapuram (8,672), Perungudi (7,963), and Manali (7,207).On the launch day, 1,094 stray dogs were vaccinated, dewormed and treated for ectoparasites in Valasaravakkam, Manali and Thiruvottiyur zones. The drive is now focusing on Adyar and Perungudi zones, with 10 teams deployed in each. The civic body has appealed to residents, animal lovers and NGOs to cooperate during the campaign to make Chennai rabies-free.
