Motorists demand quick completion of up-ramp for Coimbatore’s GD Naidu Flyover near Police Recruitment School

COIMBATORE: Motorists have demanded that the state highways department complete construction of an up-ramp for the GD Naidu Flyover near Police Recruitment School Ground here. Motorists are facing heavy traffic congestion at Lakshmi Mills Junction and Nava India on the Avinashi Road as work on the up-ramp has been stalled.Madras high court in July 2025 ordered the special projects wing of the state highways department (Coimbatore division) to demolish two pillars built for the ramp of the Avinashi Road elevated flyover project. The move comes after a landowner alleged that the construction of the pillars appeared to favour a private star hotel.A high court judge observed that the pillars, originally spaced 30-metre apart, had been repositioned without structural justification. The judge ordered demolition of the pillars and reconstruction of pillars at the originally sanctioned spots, citing risk to the structural integrity of the flyover. Meanwhile, the highways department has filed an appeal against the order.J K Baskaran, retired regional transport officer who resides in Nava India, said the heavy traffic congestion was occurring on the Avinashi Road even after the construction of GD Naidu flyover. This is especially so at Lakshmi Mills and Nava India junctions because many motorists from Gandhipuram and surrounding areas are forced to take the up-ramp at Peelamedu since ramp construction work at Police Recruitment School has been stalled.A senior highways official said, “The judgement regarding the pillars came several months ago, and we have filed an appeal against it and a two-judge bench is hearing the appeal. We have not started work due to the pending case. We hope we will get the judgement soon, and work will resume,” he said. The 10.1km-long, Rs 1,791 crore flyover project, connecting Uppilipalayam and Goldwins, is one of Tamil Nadu’s largest infrastructure undertakings inaugurated by former chief minister M K Stalin in October 2025.
