Coimbatore corporation to explore alternative recreational options at Ukkadam Periyakulam
The high court had in September banned motorboats in the lake due to environmental concerns

Coimbatore: The city municipal corporation is exploring alternatives to revive recreational activities at Ukkadam Periyakulam after the Madras high court recently ordered a halt on operating motorboats at the lake. The civic body had earlier been operating speed boats and an aqua roller at the lake. However, in an order passed in September, the high court banned motorboats due to environmental concerns, while permitting ordinary pedal boats. The court had also raised concerns over floating solar panels and commercial activities at both the Ukkadam and Valankulam lakes.Following the court’s directions, corporation officials are now exploring options to retain and introduce recreational facilities that do not affect the lake’s ecosystem. Corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said a detailed affidavit would be submitted before the court at the upcoming hearing. “Even if the court directs us to implement electric boats, it can very much be adopted. In Chennai too, a similar system has been implemented citing environmental reasons,” the commissioner said.Meanwhile, a member associated with the boat house facility flagged that the suspension of motorboats has affected visitor footfall. “On average, around 300 to 400 people visit the lake on weekends. However, following the ban on boats, the footfall has dropped drastically to around 150 to 200,” he said. He added that there are only four pedal boats, and elderly visitors and families do not prefer them. “Pedal boating is mostly preferred by youngsters,” he said. Officials said the corporation would assess the available options before deciding on a sustainable recreational model for lakes.
