COIMBATORE: Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) raided an electronic items assembly unit in Coimbatore and seized 24 LED televisions and 41 Bluetooth speakers worth around Rs 17 lakh for alleged violation of the BIS Act, 2016.The Enforcement Search and Seizure operation was conducted on Wednesday by the BIS Coimbatore Branch Office at Grace Lazerjet Technologies, Coimbatore, which sells products under the brand name “Eye Plus”. The raid was carried out based on credible information about suspected non-compliance with mandatory BIS registration requirements.The enforcement team comprised Vinith Kumar G, scientist-E/director, Divya S, scientist-D/joint director, and Gautam Chand Soni, scientist-C/deputy director. BIS said the search was conducted under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016.During the inspection, the unit was found storing and selling LED televisions and Bluetooth speakers without a valid BIS registration, officials said. The seized items included multiple models of televisions and speakers, collectively valued at about Rs 17 lakh.Ramesh K, director and head of the BIS Coimbatore branch office, said action would be initiated against the offender under provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. He said Section 29 provides that, for a first contravention, the offence is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of not less than Rs 2 lakh, which may extend up to 10 times the value of the goods or both.BIS advised consumers to check that televisions and Bluetooth speakers carry a genuine BIS registration mark and to verify registration validity using the BIS Care app by entering the R-number printed on the product.EOM
