Chennai: A 45-year-old woman suffered burns after attempting to set herself on fire outside the Chief Minister’s Special Cell at the Secretariat on Monday morning.Police personnel on duty rescued her and rushed her to hospital. Preliminary inquiries revealed that she had come to submit a petition as a land dispute issue at her village near Villupuram.Archana from Avalurpet village arrived at the Secretariat around 11am to submit a grievance at the Chief Minister’s Special Cell. She sought govt intervention in a land dispute with a local.While waiting near the entrance, Archana torched her saree. Police personnel intervened, extinguished the flames and administered first aid before shifting her to the Omandurar Govt Hospital.The incident caused panic inside the Secretariat premises for a while. Following the incident, security personnel intensified screening and surveillance of members of the public entering the complex. The Fort Police registered a case.
