Chennai: Two men were arrested for flying kites using banned glass-coated manja thread in New Washermenpet. Two kites and two spools of the prohibited thread were seized.Police identified the arrested as Surya, 20, and Prashanth, 21, both residents of New Washermenpet. Acting on a tip, a team conducted surveillance on Sivan Nagar Third Street on Sunday evening and caught the duo in the act. During the investigation, the accused told police that they had purchased the manja online.The manufacture, sale and use of manja thread are prohibited within Chennai city police jurisdiction following orders issued by the commissioner of police. The ban was imposed because the glass-coated thread poses a serious threat to motorists, pedestrians and birds, and has been linked to fatal accidents. Police registered a case.
