Chennai: Two first-year students of Pachaiyappa’s College were injured after they were attacked by a group of armed youths in the subway connecting Chennai central railway station and Park railway station in broad daylight on Monday morning.Meanwhile, police solved the attack by apprehending seven students when they were at a commercial mall in Thirumangalam on Monday evening. The students were detained for questioning.According to the police, the students arrived at Chennai central railway station and were walking through the subway towards Park railway station when they were intercepted by a group of around 20 youngsters who were waiting inside a passage.The assailants attacked the students with knives before fleeing the scene. Both victims — Hemaraj, 19, and Nitishkumar, 19 — suffered multiple stab and cut injuries to the head, neck and other parts of the body. Passers-by who witnessed the attack raised an alarm and alerted the police.Policemen from the Periamet police station rushed to the spot, rescued the injured students and shifted them to the Rajiv Gandhi Govt General Hospital for treatment.Preliminary inquiries revealed that the attack was due to previous enmity among the students of the same college. Investigators are examining whether the assault was a continuation of earlier disputes between the two groups.Police collected CCTV footage from the subway and neighbourhood and are working to track the attackers. They are also probing the motive behind the assault. The attack in a busy public subway during the morning hours caused panic among commuters.
