Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s scheme to give a 1g gold ring to babies born in govt hospitals will now cover children of women who moved elsewhere after marriage, provided both their parents remain permanent residents of TN.The govt has relaxed the residency requirement under the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram scheme, which previously required the mother to be a permanent resident of the state. The amendments to the scheme, launched by chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Sept 28, will apply to babies born in govt hospitals from June 22, 2026. Families seeking benefits under the revised conditions must submit documents establishing that both maternal grandparents are permanent residents of TN.Earlier, a patient Uma Maheswari, who lives with her husband in Karnataka’s Mysuru district, was not included in the scheme as she did not meet the permanent residency requirement. On Thursday, the health department said her parents live in Karaikudi in Sivaganga district and she was at their home for childbirth. She delivered a baby by C-section at a govt hospital in Karaikudi on Sept 17. Following the relaxation, the block medical officer presented a 1g gold ring to her baby on Wednesday, the release said.
