Chennai: After 86 days of voting, the results of election conducted to elect 23 members to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was declared by the Supreme Court-appointed high-power committee on Tuesday.Those who elected include former chairman of the council P S Amalraj, and 17 others including advocates K Balu, R C Paul Kanagaraj, M Velmurugan, G Mohanakrishnan, T Prasanna.The election to choose 23 members to the council was held on April 30 across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A total of 143 advocates contested the election. Polling was conducted at 168 polling stations, 166 in Tamil Nadu and two in Puducherry. The election recorded a voter turnout of 81%.The counting of votes cast under preferential voting system commenced in the first week of May. As per the election rules, a candidate securing 3,001 first-preference votes is declared elected. The newly elected members will elect the chairperson, vice chairperson and heads of various committees of the council.
