Chennai: A group of nearly 100 Tibetans from across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on Sunday conducted a peace march against China’s ethnic unity and progress law, which they alleged forces people in Tibet to abandon their language, culture, religion and way of life.The protesters held the images of Logba Rangzen, a Tibetan activist who died by self-immolation outside the UN’s headquarters in New York on July 2 against the implementation of this law.“Under this law, Mandarin is mandated to be taught to all children from kindergarten. Children as young as four years old are being taken away from their parents and put into the colonial boarding schools where they are taught only the Chinese language and culture. The intention is to wipe out whole Tibetan identity,” said Tsering Youdon, former MP of Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.“Tibetans all over the world are protesting against this legislation. People inside Tibet do not have a voice. We want the international community to pressurise China to stop implementing this law,” she added.Protesters said this law will affect all minorities and their cultural activities, including Tibetans and Uighurs. “We are trying to remember the sacrifice of Logba Rangzen. We have gathered from south India,” said Tenzen Dawan, a teacher from Bengaluru.The protesters said they will visit all embassies in Chennai to explain this law.
