Chennai: After remaining closed to the public for more than three years, the four-acre Muthurangam Park, one of the largest parks within Tambaram City Municipal Corporation limits, is set to be restored and upgraded at a cost of ₹11.20 crore – with a glow garden.The park in West Tambaram falling under Zone 4, will be redeveloped into a modern recreational space.The project includes illuminated trees, decorative lighting, glowing animal installations, and illuminated play equipment. New swings, children’s play areas and other facilities will also be added.According to corporation officials, the park will also include an open gym and walking tracks. CCTV cameras connected to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will be installed.Inclusive play equipment, including wheelchair-friendly swings, sand banks and ground-level merry-go-rounds for visually impaired, autistic and wheelchair-bound children, will also be installed.Corporation officials said park development has accelerated as the civic body’s financial position improved over the years. During its initial years after the corporation was formed in 2021, priority was given to administrative transition and essential civic infrastructure, leaving limited funds for the development of parks and green spaces.Tambaram Corporation Commissioner S Balachander said, “The corporation had around 100 parks when it was formed in 2021. It now has nearly 198 parks, of which around 180 are functional and maintained by the corporation.”He added that the corporation built around 10 parks in 2021-22, 15 in 2022-23, 20 in 2023-24, 24 in 2024-25 and 29 in 2025-26. “It will be completed by the end of this year,” he said.S Mahesh Kumar, a member of the United Welfare Association, West Tambaram, welcomed the project. “Muthurangam Park was built in 2012, but due to poor maintenance it became overgrown and turned into a hub for illegal activities. Restoring the park is a welcome move. The corporation should also ensure regular patrolling after 6 pm,” he said.
