Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has added 356 vehicles, 2,873 garbage bins and other equipment worth a total of ₹65 crore to strengthen solid waste management and prepare for the northeast monsoon.GCC commissioner G S Sameeran inaugurated the new fleet of vehicles and equipment from Sumeet Elko, a private agency, on Saturday. This includes 283 battery-operated vehicles, 37 refuse compactors, 28 two-tonne-capacity vehicles, seven hook loaders, and one mechanical sweeper. The equipment also includes 2,854 bins with a capacity of 1,100 liters each and 18 skip bins with a capacity of 20 cubic meters each.The additional resources are expected to help clear garbage accumulating on roads and in public spaces, particularly during heavy rain. The civic body aims to ensure timely waste removal and maintain cleanliness through the northeast monsoon season.GCC has about 27,000 sanitation workers, 12,000 of whom are under Sumeet Elko. Sameeran distributed uniforms and raincoats to sanitation workers. “My request to the public is to segregate waste. Our sanitation workers work day and night, and segregation will make the rest of the process easier and more efficient for the city,” he said.
