Chennai: AIADMK MLA and its assembly whip Agri S S Krishnamurthy has moved Madras high court challenging the amendment made to the resolution passed in Tamil Nadu assembly opposing Karnataka’s proposed construction of a dam in Mekedatu. The amendment calls for setting up a tribunal to address the issue. Admitting the plea on Thursday, the first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan directed the state govt to respond in two weeks.Advocate-general Vijay Narayan submitted that the resolution was passed unanimously in the assembly with the consent of the petitioner and the party he represents. He cannot approach the court after supporting the resolution in the assembly, he said.According to the petitioner, on June 19, Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution opposing Karnataka’s proposal. At the conclusion of the debate, the resolution was amended to include a demand for the constitution of a tribunal to address the Mekedatu issue. The amendment was opposed by AIADMK, PMK and CPI. Krishnamurthy contended that the amendment was not part of the draft resolution circulated to MLAs on June 18, and that it was adopted without discussion on the floor of the House, though the final resolution forwarded to Union govt said it had been adopted unanimously.
