NAMAKKAL: An illegal liquor racket is operating round-the-clock in Namakkal district’s Pallipalayam, around 600 metres from the local police station and close to Avaranggadu Krishnaveni Girls Higher Secondary School, residents and activists have alleged. They said the network ran a “24/7 door delivery” model that targeted working class residents despite the govt’s measures to curb illicit liquor sales. They said a quarter bottle priced at Rs 140 (TASMAC outlet rate) was sold at inflated rates of Rs 300 to Rs 400.Residents alleged the racket functioned like a cottage industry, with nearly 100 people involved. They said sellers distributed their mobile numbers to customers and promised doorstep delivery at any time. The illegal trade’s proximity to the girls’ school created fear and distress among students. “Every day we walk past groups of drunk men near the school. It is frightening and humiliating,” said a Class XII girl student.Parents also raised concerns. “Our daughters are forced to cross this stretch with hesitation. Authorities must act before something tragic happens,” said a parent.Social activists questioned police inaction. “How can such a brazen racket flourish near the police station? Are police unaware or deliberately ignoring it?” asked K Anandan, an activist.Residents demanded that the district police take immediate steps to burst the racket.
