COIMBATORE: The Race Course police in the city have arrested a state youth wing secretary of the Hindu Makkal Katchi under a non-bailable warrant in connection with a 2021 attempt-to-murder case.The arrested man has been identified as Surya, alias K Suryaprasad, 29, of Muthusamy Colony in Selvapuram.The incident dates to May 27, 2021, when a dispute erupted at the autorickshaw stand in front of the Coimbatore Junction railway station regarding picking up passengers. During the altercation, Surya stabbed Faisal with a knife. Following the incident, the Race Course police registered a case, charging him with attempt to murder and criminal intimidation.The case was tried before the Coimbatore district additional sessions court-I. On Dec 12, 2025, the court found Surya guilty and sentenced him to two and a half years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 for the offence of attempt to murder.Surya filed an appeal against the conviction, which was subsequently dismissed by the district principal sessions court. Following the dismissal, the judge issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Based on the warrant, police arrested Surya on Monday and lodged him in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
