KRISHNAGIRI: Water resources department officials on Wednesday issued floor alerts to people living on the banks of the Thenpennai river in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Cuddalore districts as they released 988 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from the KRP dam here. The water level in the reservoir rose to 50.10 feet on Wednesday due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Thenpennai river. The dam’s full capacity is 52 feet. As a preventive step, officials started releasing 988 cusecs of water from the reservoir into the Thenpennai river, leading to stronger flows downstream. “We have instructed the public not to try crossing the river or to bathe in it,” said a WRD official. The inflow into the reservoir was 913 cusecs on Tuesday evening which came down to 865 cusecs on Wednesday.
