COIMBATORE: A young woman lost her life due to excessive bleeding after attempting a home birth by watching YouTube videos near Uthukuli in Tiruppur district. The deceased, identified as Sasikala, was a resident of Thalavaipalayam near Uthukuli. Following the failed delivery attempt at home on June 25, she suffered severe postpartum haemorrhage (excessive bleeding) and was rushed to a government hospital in Perundurai. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore. Doctors rescued the baby and kept the newborn under observation. Despite their best efforts, Sasikala succumbed to her condition on Sunday. Preliminary investigations revealed that Sasikala’s first child was delivered through a Caesarean section (C-section). Eager to have a natural birth for their second child, she and her husband, along with her mother-in-law, decided to forgo medical supervision. They attempted the delivery at home by following instructional videos on YouTube. During the process, the placenta failed to detach properly, triggering severe and uncontrollable bleeding that ultimately led to her death. Fortunately, the newborn survived the ordeal and is currently under close medical supervision. Meanwhile, the Uthukuli police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
