The EU said on Friday (November 6, 2026) that “a lot of work” was still needed to reach peace in Ukraine, and the bloc would decide on its own security matters, after U.S. President Donald Trump touted a deal with Russia involving “all of Europe”.
Mr. Trump on Thursday (November 5, 2026) predicted a “very big” deal with Russia involving not only the Ukraine war but “all of Europe”, in remarks likely to fuel fresh fears on the continent of a pivot towards the Kremlin.

His comments came as Washington floated a broader rewriting of Europe’s security architecture as part of an agreement.
“We all wish that we will have a peace deal soon. We are all working in that regard,” said EU spokeswoman Paula Pinho.
“But there is a lot of work that needs to go into it, and above all, there needs to be a willingness on the side of the one who first started the war.”
Ms. Pinho added, “It’s obviously up to the European Union to decide on matters which affect its security.”
Earlier, a NATO spokeswoman said Ukraine’s allies are working for a “just and sustainable” end to the war ahead of U.S.-mediated talks next week in Abu Dhabi.
On Thursday (November 5, 2026), talks in Brussels involving U.S., Ukrainian, European, and NATO officials “built on productive discussions in Miami and Oslo and sought to advance a just and sustainable end to the war in Ukraine”, she said.
After participating by video link in the talks, Jared Kushner, the President’s envoy and son-in-law, wrote that the United States was working on “a broader European security architecture that can help establish the conditions for lasting peace”.
Mr. Kushner said Washington’s “objective is to develop practical arrangements that address the security concerns of all sides”.
He insisted that “any arrangements must fully respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independent decision-making of every nation” and said NATO would “remain central to European collective defence”.
The U.S. push will likely rattle Washington’s European allies, who have long rejected Moscow’s desire to rewrite the European security architecture.
Before launching the war in Ukraine in 2022, the Kremlin delivered an ultimatum to NATO which included a demand that the alliance’s troops be withdrawn from eastern Europe.
That was rejected by the Western military alliance.
Europe has meanwhile been seeking to play a bigger role in the U.S.-led push to end the fighting.
Mr. Kushner said Washington would “consult closely with our European partners on the sidelines” of the Abu Dhabi talks and “if progress is made, aim to move toward a broader multilateral format with their direct participation”.
