Erode: A daily wage worker was brutally murdered in Erode city late on Saturday night.The deceased has been identified as S Kannan, of Veerappan Chathiram. He was employed as a driver at a calendar making mill in Sengunthar Nagar in the city.Police said he was suddenly attacked by an unidentified assailant wielding a wooden log, when returning home from work. “He suffered severe head and body injuries, and died on the spot,” said an officer from Veerappan Chathiram station.The assailant fled immediately after committing the crime. Locals, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene and found Kannan collapsed in a pool of blood, and alerted the police.Police recovered the body and sent it to Erode Government Headquarters Hospital for a postmortem.Forensic experts examined the crime scene and collected the weapon and other crucial evidence. Police also scrutinised CCTV camera footage from the locality.A case has been registered, and a special team formed to track down the assailant. Investigators are probing if the murder stemmed from personal enmity or other motives.
