‘Customs officer’ steals gold jewellery worth ₹12 lakh at Chennai airport

Chennai: A man posing as a customs officer stole a gold necklace worth ₹12 lakh from a passenger at Chennai airport on Tuesday night. Police registered a case and launched a search for the suspect using CCTV footage.Nandagopal, 23, of Anna Nagar had arrived at Chennai airport to receive a woman who had travelled from Coimbatore. She was carrying an envelope containing a gold necklace.As they walked through Terminal 1, a man who identified himself as a customs official, approached them and claimed the envelope contained smuggled gold jewellery. He took the envelope and instructed the pair to follow him for questioning. The suspect then walked towards the international terminal and disappeared with the jewellery.Nandagopal reported the incident to customs and CISF personnel, who confirmed that customs had not seized any jewellery from the passengers. Airport police have registered a case and are tracing the suspect through CCTV footage from the terminal.
