Chennai: Tambaram corporation has started cracking down on establishments that allow water to stagnate unchecked on their premises, leading to excessive mosquito breeding. On Monday, the civic body collected ₹1.29 lakh in fines from 88 places in all its five zones.The corporation warned that construction sites, hostels, educational institutions, and commercial establishments that allow water to stagnate unchecked on their premises will be fined up to ₹1 lakh. The measure is part of the civic body’s efforts towards dengue preparedness, Tambaram mayor Vasnathakumari said.“In the past, we have issued warnings to establishments not taking adequate preparedness measures. This time, we decided to impose fines because several fever cases have been reported. The institutions and construction sites were fined from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 on Monday,” the mayor said.The corporation also urged the public to destroy items such as tyres, plastic articles, containers and unwanted materials that can hold stagnant water in their residences and report stagnation in and around their premises. In case of fever, people are advised to immediately seek treatment at the nearest govt hospital or Urban Primary Health Centre.
