Coimbatore medical shop sealed for illegally selling psychotropic drugs to youth

COIMBATORE: A medical shop located near Kuniyamuthur here was sealed by drugs control department officials on Tuesday for selling psychotropic drugs to youngsters, including students, without prescriptions from registered doctors.Following a tip-off that Meena Medical Shop on the CBM College Road in Kovaipudur was targeting youngsters by supplying habit-forming controlled substances, a team from the Kuniyamuthur police station and drugs control department officials inspected the premises.They found illegal distribution of heavily regulated drugs. Investigations confirmed that the medical shop had been selling these pills directly to youngsters without any registered doctor’s prescription, contributing to substance abuse in the locality. Officials sealed the premises to prevent further illicit activities.The city police issued a stern warning to all medical shops operating in the city limits. They warned that “selling scheduled drugs, painkillers, and psychiatric medications without a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner is a severe criminal offence under the law. Any pharmacy found violating these regulations will face immediate cancellation of their business licence. Furthermore, the individuals involved will be booked under stringent legal provisions, including the Goondas Act. They will face immediate imprisonment.”
