COIMBATORE: Residents of RS Puram have said the Coimbatore corporation’s renovated indoor stadium in RS Puram, which is yet to be opened for the public, is being used for anti-social activities by some people. They have urged the civic body to make the indoor stadium, which is equipped with modern gym equipment, available to the public. The indoor stadium, located in Ward 71, has remained locked for nearly six months since its renovation. Revathi, a resident, said, “This ward primarily consists of residents and young people. The corporation’s indoor stadium could provide an affordable space for them to participate in sports or exercise.”A vendor near the indoor stadium noted that the facility has turned into a storage area for workers. He said, “If the facility remains closed, the condition of the equipment will deteriorate, leading to further expenses for replacements. Additionally, construction materials are being stored onsite. Also, the presence of liquor bottles on the premises is a clear indication of people’s movement inside. The new paint is already starting to peel, and I have concerns about the quality of the renovation.”B Vidhya, another resident of RS Puram, added, “The main goals are affordability and easy access to recreational activities. If the stadium remains closed, many young people will be forced to join expensive gyms for workouts. Even if it opens, maintenance and cleanliness must be prioritized; otherwise, attendance will gradually decline.”Despite multiple attempts by TOI to get a comment from the corporation, no response has been received.
