COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police register around 75 cases daily against speeding motorists using a modern, state-of-the-art speed-detection device called speed radar gun. Police have registered more than 1,500 cases in the last 20 days, and a fine of Rs 1,000 each has been imposed on offenders.One device has been assigned to the city now, with officers operating it at accident-prone hotspots and frequent speeding zones. The unit was procured at a cost of Rs 30 lakh. The department has requested three additional units from govt.Police have deployed the device to drastically cut down road accidents in the city. The initiative comes alongside ongoing traffic awareness drives and strict enforcement against overspeeding.The speed radar gun automatically detects vehicles exceeding the city’s 40 km/h speed limit, captures photos of the vehicle along with its registration number plate and enables officers to issue immediate fines. It can detect two-wheeler riders travelling without helmets.S S Maheswaran, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Coimbatore city, said the camera and sensors installed in this modern device enable traffic police to measure vehicle speeds and identify riders without helmets. Photos of the vehicle and its number plate are captured and stored, allowing fine receipts and violation details including time and date to be sent directly to the vehicle owner via text message. He added that the device could measure noise levels to penalise vehicles using illegal air horns.Eighteen traffic personnel from East and West traffic police divisions have undergone specialised training to operate the device.
