COIMBATORE: As part of the ongoing measures to curb road accidents, the Coimbatore city police have registered 855 drunk driving cases during an intensive, week-long vehicle checking drive here.According to data available with the Coimbatore city police, traffic and law and order police registered 855 cases from July 26 to August 2. Of this, 309 were registered by traffic police while 546 were booked by law and order police in the city.Coimbatore city deputy commissioner of police (traffic) S S Maheshwaran said the number of accidents from Jan 1 to Aug 2 had increased compared to the same period in last year. Until Aug 2 of 2025, a total of 5,600 accident cases had been reported while in the same period this year, the numbers increased to 6,272. “We are taking several measures to bring down the accident rates in the city. As part of these measures, intensive vehicle checks to monitor drunk driving is being done across city,” Maheshwaran said.He added that drunk driving was one of the important factors in accidents and other crimes like hurt cases and drunken brawls. “So, police personnel, including law and order and traffic, are instructed to do vehicle checks,” he said.
