COIMBATORE: In a major crackdown aimed at eradicating narcotics from educational hubs, the Coimbatore district police on Saturday conducted simultaneous surprise raids at more than 50 residential locations housing college students.The intensive search operation was carried out in Kovilpalayam, Sulur and Chettipalayam police station limits under the direct supervision of superintendent of police A Pavan Kumar as part of the ongoing “Drug-Free Coimbatore” campaign.More than 400 police personnel divided into more than 50 specialised teams headed by deputy superintendents of police conducted the coordinated sweeps targeting private hostels, rented rooms and houses occupied by students from nearly 30 colleges.During the multi-location drive, police registered one case involving cannabis (ganja) and two cases related to the possession of banned tobacco products. Additionally, officers seized 14 vehicles lacking valid documents. Authorities stated that ownership verification and document checks for the seized vehicles were under way.Senior officials confirmed that similar unannounced inspections would continue in private accommodation facilities and commercial areas adjacent to educational institutions to curb the distribution and consumption of illegal substances among students.The Coimbatore district police have urged the public to report any information regarding drug trafficking or usage via the official “NIZHAL” QR code system or by contacting the district police control room at 94981 81212 or via WhatsApp at 77081 00100. Authorities assured that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.
