Woman, daughter drown in water storage pit in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: A 50-year-old woman and her daughter drowned in a water storage pit while attempting to save a family member at an agricultural field near Karamadai in Coimbatore district on Friday.The deceased have been identified as S Rajamani, 50, and her daughter S Vigneshwari, 35. Police said the incident took place when Rajamani, Vigneshwari and Rajamani’s son Saravanakumar, 30 were harvesting tomatoes on their farm.Around 2pm, Saravanakumar got into a 12-foot-deep water pit in the field, for a bath. However, shortly after entering, he experienced acute breathing difficulties and cried out for help. Seeing her son in distress, Rajamani reached out to pull him to safety but lost her footing and fell into the pit. Spurred by the sight of her mother and brother struggling in the water, Vigneshwari jumped in to rescue them, only to be submerged as well.Vigneshwari’s young daughter, who witnessed the tragedy, immediately alerted nearby farmworkers, following which the police and the 108 emergency ambulance services were called. Soon after, police and rescue services personnel rescued all three individuals from the pit.“Emergency medical personnel examined the victims at the site, declaring both Rajamani and Vigneshwari dead. Saravanakumar survived the ordeal and was rushed to the Govt Hospital in Mettupalayam, where he is currently undergoing treatment,” said a police officer.The bodies of the mother and daughter have been sent to the Mettupalayam Govt Hospital for a postmortem. Karamadai Police have registered a case.
