Chennai: As part of Census 2027, self-enumeration by residents in the city will be carried out from July 17 to July 31, marking the first phase of the population count that will use digital technology and online platforms for the first time. This will be followed by the house listing and housing census by GCC officials from Aug 1 to Aug 31 across the city.To support the house listing and housing census operations, GCC commissioner and principal census officer has appointed 256 officials as field trainers. These include junior engineers, assistant engineers, health officers, sanitary inspectors, tax assessors and licence inspectors. Officials from the Directorate of Census Operations and the deputy director of the district statistics department have been appointed as master trainers.Through these field trainers, training will subsequently be imparted to around 11,000 enumerators and 1,800 supervisors who will carry out the census exercise across Chennai.Ahead of the exercise, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Monday commenced a three-day training programme for field trainers from June 15 to June 17. The training was inaugurated by the additional city census officer and regional deputy commissioner (Central and South).The training for Census 2027 field trainers in Chennai will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, from June 15 to June 17, is being held at five training centres, while the second phase will take place from June 18 to June 20 at three centres.A total of 171 field trainers are participating in the first phase, which began at the conference halls of the offices of the additional city census officer and regional deputy commissioners (Central and South).
