COIMBATORE: Contract workers employed by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, including DBC (domestic breeding check) malaria workers, sewage-cleaning staff and RR special workers, have alleged that their salaries have not been disbursed, leaving them struggling to meet the Diwali festival expenses. In a petition addressed to corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, general secretary of the workers’ union R Tamil Nadu Selvam said the delay had caused severe financial hardship to employees and their families. He stated that nearly 90% of the workers depended entirely on their monthly wages and that some had been forced to pledge their bank passbooks with private moneylenders to meet immediate expenses.“Many were struggling to buy new clothes for their children and meet other essential expenses ahead of the festival. It’s not just about festival but their livelihood because they are entirely dependent on their salaries. This is deeply distressing,” Selvam said.He urged the corporation administration to intervene and ensure the immediate release of pending salaries. Several workers were reportedly waiting at ward offices, hoping to receive their wages before the festival.Meanwhile, the workers on Saturday held a protest against the delay and demanded immediate disbursement of their salaries.
