COIMBATORE: MDMK councillor Chithra Vellingiri of ward 26 on Monday urged the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps to clear and desilt stormwater drains. She alleged that the stormwater drains had not been cleaned properly and that many of them were clogged with soil and silt.In a statement addressed to the corporation commissioner, Chithra said sewage water had entered several homes, particularly those belonging to economically weaker families. She told TOI that the corporation should have completed the desilting before the northeast monsoon started. “In areas like Pioneer Mills Road, workers were only deployed on Monday morning after complaints of overflow were reported the previous night. The issue now is that the silt cannot be cleared until it dries. As a result, it will likely wash back into the drain when the next rain comes.”She said areas like Ellai Thottam Road and V K Road faced similar issues in the past week following heavy rainfall. “The issue is not limited to my wards, but many areas in Ukkadam, Podanur, Kuniyamuthir and surrounding areas have also witnessed similar problems,” she added.
