CHENNAI: Amid speculation about a possible political entry, Tamil actor Dhanush is scheduled to meet the women’s wing of his recently reorganised fan association at a private college in Chennai on Sunday. The meeting comes after the actor’s fan club, formerly known as Dhanush Narpani Mandram, was renamed Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam and restructured as a welfare movement. In Tamil, “Iyakkam” means an organisation/movement, and the renaming has drawn attention since chief minister C Joseph Vijay renamed his fan club into All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam in 2009, a first step towards politics. The change was formally adopted at a recent meeting of the association’s executives in Coimbatore. The organisation has also unveiled a new logo featuring the actor with folded hands against a large red star, enclosed within a circular red-and-white border.Dhanush has not made any official announcement about entering politics or forming a political party. However, the restructuring of his fan association has fuelled discussions in Tamil Nadu about the organisation’s future role, including its focus on coordinated social service initiatives. For many women attending Sunday’s meeting, however, the immediate attraction was the opportunity to see the actor in person.Several fans travelled to the venue despite heavy rain in Chennai.“My name is Sophia, we are coming from Villivakkam. We were invited here for an event, but our main reason for coming in this pouring rain is to see Dhanush sir,” one of the fans told news agency PTI.“We don’t know what he is going to talk about today, but we are confident it will be useful for us,” she added.Hannah, who travelled from Perambur, said it would be her first opportunity to see the actor in person.“I came here to see Dhanush. I have seen his movies many times, but this is the first time I am going to see him live. I am so eager and excited to watch him,” she said.Bhanupriya, a fan from Triplicane, also spoke about her longstanding admiration for the actor.“I am a big fan of his. From childhood, I watch all his movies. I am so excited to see him.”(With inputs from PTI)
