Chennai: Chief minister Joseph Vijay on Thursday launched the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme, which aims to provide additional incentives to projects approved under Semicon India 2.0, along with support for other investments. The programme targets the entire semiconductor value chain, including design, chip fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging, equipment and raw materials and research and development. The scheme will focus on two areas: one providing financial incentives and additional support for projects selected under the national semiconductor program and the other backing investments which are believed to have strategic advantages to the state’s semiconductor ecosystem, according to an official statement. The scheme will help TN emerge as a key semiconductor and advanced electronics sector hub, attracting investments, it said. TN govt has repeatedly stressed promoting the semiconductor value chain in the state, focusing on employment generation for the youth.Chief minister earlier in Aug announced that a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park will be set up at Maduramangalam, Kancheepuram district. State industries minister S Keerthana earlier in the assembly session announced the govt’s plans to provide additional incentives for the projects selected under the Semicon 2.0 program.Further details of the incentives and structure of the scheme are not known at this point. It is important to note that the previous govt’s matching grants and subsidies for electronics component manufacturing helped attract the predominant projects in the electronics component manufacturing scheme (ECMS).
