COIMBATORE: Six people were injured after a tourist van plunged into a 50-foot-deep gorge near Kaviyaruvi, near Aliyar, on the Valparai Ghat Road on Saturday night.Police said a group of tourists comprising 23 adults and 13 children from Seelapadi in Dindigul district visited Valparai on Saturday. While returning to Dindigul, driver Manikandan noticed a brake problem. He stopped the van near a checkpost and asked the other passengers to continue their journey by bus, saying he would follow after checking the vehicle.The passengers boarded a govt bus bound for Palani. Manikandan and five others continued to travel in the van.When the van reached the first hairpin bend near Aliyar Kaviyaruvi, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The van broke through the barrier on the right side of the road and plunged into a gorge.Police and emergency personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The six occupants, including the driver, sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to Govt Headquarters Hospital in Pollachi for treatment.
