COIMBATORE: An elephant calf that was separated from its mother in Anthiyur forest division is being monitored by veterinarians at Wildlife Transit and Treatment Centre at Pethikuttai near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district.The calf that lost its mother in Ennai Mangalam forest area under Anthiyur forest division was rescued by forest officials in June. Officials initially kept the calf under their care for 18 days and attempted to reunite it with other elephant herds. As the attempts did not yield results, the calf was shifted to the Wildlife Transit and Treatment Centre at Pethikuttai in July. It is currently being provided with the required nutritional support and medical care.Forest department officials said veterinarians were closely monitoring the calf’s health and ensuring that it received adequate food and treatment.Anthiyur forest range officer M Nandhini said the calf was being cared for at the centre after efforts to reunite it with other elephant herds proved unsuccessful.In another incident in June, an elephant calf found wandering in a residential area in Lingapuram near Sirumugai after being separated from its mother was rescued and brought to the centre. After being cared for at the centre, the calf was later shifted to Kozhikamuthi elephant camp in Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
