COIMBATORE: As many as 15 murders were reported in Coimbatore district between June and August this year, prompting the district police to intensify patrolling in isolated areas and near Tasmac liquor outlets, particularly on the outskirts. According to senior police officials, the district recorded 16 murders during the corresponding three-month period last year.Police said most of the murders reported this year were not pre-planned or linked to revenge motives or the involvement of rowdy elements. Several incidents were attributed to sudden provocation and disputes that escalated into violence.Patrolling has been intensified in isolated locations after some murders were reported from such places in the rural parts. Police teams have also been keeping a close watch on areas around Tasmac shops to prevent incidents of violence.“We are maintaining law and order in the district and taking all necessary measures to ensure public peace. There is no need for the public to panic,” the officer said.As part of preventive measures, police have collected details of students staying outside college hostels. Officers are monitoring locations where students and youngsters gather at night, particularly in areas that could become vulnerable to criminal activities.Police said the monitoring was aimed at identifying potential trouble spots and preventing incidents before they escalate. Patrolling and surveillance have been stepped up at locations identified as vulnerable. The district police said they were taking measures to curb crimes and maintain public safety.
