CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu govt on Thursday placed two senior IPS officers — additional director-general of police and director of Tamil Nadu Police Academy A Arun, and inspector-general of police and Coimbatore city commissioner of police N Kannan — on compulsory wait.A notification to this effect, issued by home secretary K Manivasan, said the order would take immediate effect.Consequently, Rajeev Kumar, DGP (Training), was given full additional charge of the Police Academy, while inspector-general R V Ramya Bharathi was given additional charge as Coimbatore city commissioner of police. Their additional charges would continue “until further orders,” it read.Meanwhile, citing ‘administrative grounds’, Yasmin, assistant commissioner of police of Koyambedu sub-division, was also shifted out and placed on the Vacancy Reserve (VR) by Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, on Thursday. The order requested Chennai city commissioner of police to relieve Yasmin immediately — “by today itself” — adding that she should report to the DGP office’s vacancy reserve “immediately.”Yasmin, in her capacity as assistant commissioner of Anti-Vice Squad (AVS), had, on Feb 20, 2025, filed a “further action dropped” report before special court for Pocso cases seeking to close the child rape case against granite baron R Veeramani, who was arrested on Sept 29 along with two of his associates. The arrests came days after the special judge, S Padma, rejected the ‘further action dropped’ report on Aug 19, , and, instead, said: “Final report not accepted. Further investigation is ordered. Further investigation shall be completed or progress shall be reported in four weeks.”Within days of the rejection order, at least four arrests have been made, more rape survivors identified, several summonses for inquiry served and one look-out circular (LOC) has been issued. The issue has evoked strong political and social responses from several quarters, seeking a complete investigation to ensure that every person involved in the racket has been identified and punished.
