Chennai: A youth who was caught stealing a battery from a motorcycle near the Chengalpet New Bus Stand was beaten by members of the public and tied to an electric pole before being handed over to the police on Tuesday night.Police identified the youth as Sujith, a native of Kanyakumari district.Shanmuganathan, a resident of Gokulapuram near Chengalpet, runs a pani puri stall near the New bus stand. After closing for the day, he placed a battery kept at the shop on his motorcycle to take it home and began locking up the stall.At that time, Sujith took the motorcycle battery and tried to flee. Shanmuganathan noticed this and raised an alarm.Motorists and members of the public in the area chased the youth and caught him. They assaulted him and tied him to a nearby electric pole with a rope.The public later alerted police personnel, who later reached the spot, freed the youth, and questioned him.He was subsequently handed over to the Chengalpet Town police for further investigation.
