COIMBATORE: The Tirupur district police have stepped up security in Dharapuram assembly constituency ahead of the Oct 6 byelection, with temporary checkposts having been set up at 34 locations for round-the-clock surveillance and vehicle checks.According to police, the temporary checkposts have been established across the constituency to prevent any unlawful activities and ensure a peaceful and fear-free polling process. Checks are also continuing at the existing permanent checkposts. Police personnel have been deployed for 24-hour surveillance and checking as part of measures to maintain law and order during the election period.Security has been tightened for candidates campaigning in the constituency. Police personnel led by inspectors have been assigned to accompany each candidate during their campaign tours. Officials said the security arrangements were aimed at ensuring that candidates could campaign freely and voters could exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.The district police said monitoring and checking would continue throughout the election process to ensure peaceful and free polling in the constituency.Election flying squad officials on a routine vehicle inspection seized unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 5.50 lakh that was found concealed in a car in Dharapuram. According to officials, the cash was found during a thorough search of the vehicle. When questioned, the occupants failed to produce valid documents for the money and offered contradictory statements regarding its source.The flying squad confiscated the cash and handed it over to the Dharapuram tehsildar for further investigation and legal proceedings.
