CHENNAI: The CB-CID cybercrime wing has registered a case after an AI-generated deepfake video of Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay appeared on Facebook and other social media platforms.The video showed a person resembling Vijay speaking in Hindi and asking people seeking financial assistance to contact a specific WhatsApp number. The social media centre of the state police alerted the CB-CID cybercrime wing about the video. Subsequently, a cybercrime wing police inspector attached to the CB-CID was assigned to check the video.Based on the report, the CB-CID registered a case on Wednesday. Police sent a request to Meta seeking details of the Facebook ID and logs through which the video was uploaded. The cybercrime wing was working to identify those behind the video and take legal action against them. Steps were also taken to remove the video from social media platforms.Preliminary investigation revealed that other AI-generated videos of the chief minister were also being circulated on Facebook and other social media platforms.Police appealed to the public not to contact phone numbers mentioned in such videos or join WhatsApp groups linked to them. They also advised people not to follow instructions given through such fraudulent messages.Police urged people to remain alert about AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating public figures and share information about the scam with family and friends.
