CHENNAI: Former CM M K Stalin said the TVK government’s decision to drop the Parandur international airport project would set Tamil Nadu’s development back by several years.“Dropping Parandur is not change. It’s an irreversible setback for Tamil Nadu’s growth,” Stalin said, opposing the decision announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay in the Assembly.Stalin said making such a far-reaching announcement under Rule 110, without allowing a debate or giving members an opportunity to voice their views, was “deeply troubling”.He said Tamil Nadu’s position as a leader in sectors including electronics exports and automobiles made a world-class airport in Chennai essential. “Rejecting such a vital project is not change. It is a massive disappointment,” he said.Stalin said Parandur had been selected after evaluating alternative sites and that land acquisition was almost complete, with several preparatory works and approvals already in place.“If the new govt now starts all over again, identifies another location and goes through the entire process before work can even begin, Tamil Nadu’s growth trajectory itself will DROP,” he said.

Stalin said the decision could weaken Tamil Nadu’s position as an investment destination and benefit competing states. He also warned that ambitious economic targets of $1 trillion and $1.5 trillion could not be achieved without industrial growth.“Taken without foresight, planning or consultation, this decision by the TVK government is a devastating blow to the employment dreams of Tamil Nadu’s youth,” he said.
