Erode: A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for raping an 85-year-old woman in Anthiyur, in Nagalur panchayat the previous night.The arrested has been identified as Vicky, son of Rajendran, a resident of Rishivandiyam in Kallakurichi district.“The woman was alone at her farmhouse when the accused, gagged her, bit her wrist and raped her before fleeing the scene,” said a police officer from Anthiyur station. He added that the woman suffered heavy bleeding and was unable to move. However, she managed to alert a neighbour the next morning, after which she was rushed in an ambulance to the Anthiyur Government Hospital and later referred to the Erode Government Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.Based on the woman’s complaint, police registered a case and initiated an investigation. They subsequently traced the accused to a sugarcane field in Perumalpalayam where he was working. He was arrested by Anthiyur inspector and later handed over to the Bhavani all-women police station.Meanwhile, the incident has sparked a massive outrage in the locality, with residents expressing safety concerns and demanding strict punishment for the accused.
