Coimbatore: The prohibition enforcement wing (PEW) in Coimbatore district arrested a migrant worker from West Bengal on Monday, for growing a cannabis plant at his residence near Pollachi.The arrested has been identified as Almo Gir Molla, 31, from West Bengal. He was working at a poultry farm in Pollachi. He was arrested after a PEW team led by inspector A Venkatesh searched his residence at Kasipattinam near Pollachi, following a tip off.Police seized the fully grown cannabis plant which was around six feet high. “During questioning, he admitted that he had brought cannabis seeds from West Bengal and grown it at his residence.” said an officer.He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.Meanwhile, an officer attached to the PEW wing said the crackdown is part of intensified surveillance efforts to curb the sale of narcotic substances in Coimbatore district. He added that checkpoints have been set up across the district to monitor drug peddlers, as efforts are on to make the district drug-free.
