Chennai: City police suspended inspector Mohammed Buhari on Wednesday, a day after his arrest on charges of extorting about ₹40 lakh from a businessman by threatening to implicate him in the 2024 murder of BSP leader Armstrong. City commissioner of police A Amalraj ordered his suspension from service.Buhari, who was attached to the St Thomas Mount police station and was part of the special team that investigated the Armstrong murder, was arrested, along with a home guard, following the businessman’s complaint.Police had earlier transferred inspector T Saravanan to the vacancy reserve and ordered an internal inquiry into complaints against him. Saravanan had taken charge as the Velachery law and order inspector a few days before his transfer.Senior police officers have decided to question members of the special investigation team that handled Armstrong’s murder to determine whether any member misused official authority or was involved in similar extortion. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
