COIMBATORE: Coimbatore corporation rewarded four residents of ward 38 with silver gifts for implementing the four-bin source segregation system. The newly introduced Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management Rules 2026 mandate segregation of waste into four categories — wet, dry, sanitary, and special wastes. Interestingly, west zone has appeared to be the forerunner in implementing the rules.The Union govt has allowed three years for complete compliance of the 2026 rules in all local bodies in the country. The new MSW rules came into effect in May.The rewarded residents were from Anbu Nagar, Sindhu Street and Viruksha street of ward 38. On Friday, corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja presented the residents with certificates of appreciation along with the rewards.According to the sanitary officer of the west zone, the residents across the corporation were given awareness of the new MSW rules and in a few days, a couple of residents volunteered to implement the four-bin source segregation system without anyone insisting. The officer said, “Already people are used to giving sanitary waste separately. So, following the new rules would be much easier.”City health officer Dr V C Subash Gandhi said, “No other zone has so far come forward to implement this. Since they have done it out of their own interest, we wanted to appreciate them. The silver gifts for the four residents were sponsored by one of the residents. Residents of the Periyar Nagar in ward 36 have expressed interest to implement the same. So, the corporation has planned to rope in corporate social responsibility funds to buy four bins to 32 houses in that street. We have also planned to engage residents’ welfare associations to implement and reward the best team.”
