CHENNAI: An inspector of police was arrested on Tuesday on charges of sexually harassing a woman walking with her husband in Velachery on Sunday night.The Velachery police identified the delinquent officer as Manimaran, a resident of Velachery who was serving as a Traffic Enforcement Wing inspector in Ranipet district. He was with the help of the registration number of the motorcycle involved in the incident.According to police, he returned to his residence in Chennai on Sunday and later consumed alcohol with his brother-in-law before the two travelled on a motorcycle.Police said the targeted woman was walking with her husband along Orandiyamman Koil Street when the pillion rider on the motorcycle approached them and inappropriately touched her before attempting to flee. The woman raised an alarm. Following this, her husband and nearby residents intercepted the motorcycle.During the confrontation, the accused reportedly identified himself as a police inspector and argued with the public before escaping from the spot on the motorcycle. The woman later lodged a complaint at the Velachery Police Station. Investigators examined the vehicle registration number, identified the suspect as Manimaran and arrested him.A case was registered under sexual harassment charges against Manimaran. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.In another incident in Puzhal, a 34-year-old man was arrested for sexually harassing a woman riding a two-wheeler on the Maduravoyal-Madhavaram Bypass near Puzhal. Police arrested the suspect, Vignesh of Chinna Mathur, near Manali.According to police, the 32-year-old woman was returning home from Poonamallee on Sunday when Vignesh followed her, made obscene gestures, used sexually explicit remarks and asked her to accompany him. She alerted a patrolling police officer, who intercepted the accused and handed him over to the Puzhal police. His two-wheeler was seized, and he was remanded in judicial custody.
