Chennai: A five-month pregnant woman was strangled to death by her husband, a Home Guard personnel, following a quarrel over the paternity of the unborn child at Palayasivaram near Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday.The deceased Sonia (28) married Somasundaram (28), a home guard from the same locality, about six months ago. Police said the couple had frequent quarrels after marriage. In an argument that broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, Somasundaram questioned the paternity of the foetus.During questioning, he told police that a medical condition had left him unable to father a child, deepening his suspicion. He had not disclosed the condition to his wife. Police said he confronted Sonia over the issue, leading to a heated argument. During the altercation, he strangled her to death, locked the house from the outside, and left.When Sonia’s parents were unable to reach her on the phone, they went to check on her and found her dead. They alerted the Salavakkam police. Police sent the body to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for postmortem.Later, on Monday evening they secured Somasundaram. As the death occurred within seven years of marriage, an inquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Kancheepuram is on.
