Chennai: A 26-year-old police constable was injured after falling from a moving suburban train while chasing a man who snatched her mobile phone near Tambaram on Sunday night.Adolin Prabha was attached to the forensic department, and was travelling in a general compartment of an EMU train from Tambaram to Chennai Beach. According to police, Ajay Nayak, 28, a construction worker, snatched her phone as the train left Sanatorium station. While attempting to grab the phone back, she lost her balance and fell from the moving train, sustaining injuries to her head and face. Passengers pulled the emergency chain, stopped the train and detained the suspect. He was later handed over to Railway Protection Force.Prabha was taken to the Tambaram GH iand later shifted to a private hospital in Chromepet, where she received stitches. Police said Nayak, who is from Assam, was uncooperative during the interrogation and appeared to be under the influence of ganja. Nayak and his wife had been working as construction labourers in Trichy and had come to Tambaram, while preparing to return to Assam, after not being paid wages for two months. Later, his wife arrived at the police station with their child and demanded his release. The police said she attempted to jump in front of an approaching train with the child, but was stopped by RPF personnel. They later counselled her and sent her home with the child.Railway police registered a case, recovered the phone and arrested Nayak. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
