COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore corporation has intensified crackdown on illegal garbage dumping, imposing a total fine of Rs 4 lakh on four offenders during surprise inspections across the city.During the inspection on Wednesday, corporation officials found several instances of garbage illegally dumped in public places. Acting on the directions of corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, officials imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on four individuals responsible for creating large garbage dumps instead of ensuring proper disposal. A total of Rs 4 lakh was imposed.In a separate case, a person who had dumped waste near the corporation electric crematorium at Veerakeralam in Ward 40 was identified with police assistance. The corporation’s health team imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 and warned the person against dumping waste in public places and waterbodies.According to corporation officials, around 1,215 metric tonne (MT) of solid waste is collected daily from households and commercial establishments in 100 wards. Of this, about 835 MT comprises biodegradable waste and 380 MT consists of non-biodegradable waste, which are segregated and processed at composting centres.According to a release form corporation, it is closely monitoring efforts to achieve 100% door-to-door waste collection, with sanitation workers, vehicle drivers and sanitary supervisors deployed across all wards. It is conducting awareness campaigns through pamphlets, rallies, banners, loudspeaker announcements and wall murals to educate residents on the four categories of waste segregation prescribed under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026—biodegradable waste, non-biodegradable waste, sanitary waste and special waste. Weekly review meetings are being held in all five corporation zones to monitor solid waste management activities.
