Chennai: Metrowater has seized 30 unauthorised submersible pumps in Taramani that were illegally drawing water from the pipeline network, leaving tail-end residents with inadequate supply.A senior official said 22 pumps were confiscated last month and eight more this month, following repeated complaints from residents. Residents in Ramasamy Street, Anjugam Ammal Street, Rani Ammal Street, Bharathiar Street, Kattabomman Street and Periyar Nagar — all at the tail end of the Taramani pipeline — had reported receiving little or no water despite regular supply being pumped into the network.Inspections found submersible pumps installed directly on pipelines, siphoning off large volumes of water upstream. They also reduce pressure further down the line. “Supply to these areas was monitored. There were no blockages in the main lines. Subsequent inspections of commercial establishments led to the seizure of motor pumps,” the official said. Officials said violators will be fined ₹10,000 for commercial use and ₹7,500 for residential use. Failure to pay within a week will lead to disconnection.Metrowater said enforcement will be extended across all 15 operational areas, with regular checks to prevent reinstallation of pumps. Residents have been urged to report illegal tapping.
